Remembering Roger Mallette

Friend and Creative Innovator Roger Mallette

Gone But Not Forgotten
1964-2012

Thousands of bicyclists around the globe know the Retro Image Apparel brand, but few know how Roger Mallette doggedly pursued his dream of bringing iconic vintage imagery to cyclists everywhere.  In just ten short years Roger transformed a $250.00 investment and a sidewalk t-shirt booth into his successful company, Retro Image Apparel.  Roger’s artistic spirit and tireless work ethic are the stuff of legend and a source of inspiration to us all.

Embodying the spirit of his adopted hometown of Portland, Oregon, Roger Mallette lived all of his 48 years out loud.  Roger’s vibrant personality brought joy to the cycling community.  His dedication and generosity brought jobs and growth to Portland.  His love and friendship bettered our lives.  His absence affects us all and we are saddened by the loss of our dear friend.

We at Bicyclinghub.com couldn’t be prouder to have been witness to Roger’s success.  Owner, Doug Duguay, fondly remembers the early days when he and Roger shared office space, forging the close friendship that both men enjoyed for many years.  In expressing his profound grief at Roger’s passing, “Roger was like a brother to me,” Doug said "my heart has been heavy since I learned of his passing a week ago."

Since joining us here in Portland four years ago, Roger embraced our local love of beer and bikes with gusto.  As was his nature, he wasted no time expressing his love of Portland culture by collaborating with local institutions like Lucky Lab Brewing Co. to produce his whimsical and much loved brand of cycling jerseys, Micro Beer Jerseys.

Please join us in celebrating Roger’s life by proudly wearing his art, as carried on by the good folks at Retro Image Apparel.

Bicylinghub.com proudly carries a full line of Retro and Micro Beer Jerseys, which we encourage you to wear in Roger's honor.

Mark the Start of Cyclocross Season in Style

It's that time of the year again. Ahhhh, cyclocross season: where hard-core roadies tempered from a summer full of road racing try their hand at the dirty side of the sport, mountain-bikers bunny-hop the barriers with ease, and rabid fans ring cowbells and offer frothy beer hand-ups while heckling their favorite riders. Whether you show up to race, ride, or revel in 45 minutes of lactic-acid-building anaerobic threshold, it's important to pack a towel and a clean change of clothes after the mud, sweat and gear-thrashing is through.

Our friends at Crossbikereview.com have offered up the WC Ciclo-cross T-Shirt by Retro Image Apparel as an appropriate way to display your love of the sport. Product review below.

. .
Scott Mares from Crossbikereview.com says:

NOTE: this review was based on the 2010 Olive color. 2011 brings us back to BLACK!

We Liked:

So we got the shirt in the mail and one of the first things that we noticed was how soft it was. This will be a pleasant surprise if you are use to getting t shirts that don't have that silky feeling to them. So this was a score on the actual shirt itself. So with the softness and the color combined the shirt has a slight sheen to it. I am also happy that the shirt is preshrunk. I cant tell you how I hate getting a shirt and loving it only to pull it out and cant wear it because it shrunk 2 sizes... AAAArrrrrggggg.
Next we took a good look at the graphics. I am very happy with what is on the shirt. Even though the graphics are "Distressed" there is a lot of detail in the print. Some times when you distress the graphics you lose the detail.

We Didn't Like

You know there is really nothing not to like about the shirt that we got. But with that said I would be interested in having more of a color selection for this print. maybe a baby blue for the ladies that love cyclocross as much as we do.

The Final Say

So the bottom line is that this is a cool shirt to have in your dresser. Going out to the races you can show your love not only to the sport of cycling but you can set your self apart from the heard with this "back in the day" cyclocross shirt. There are very few cycling t shirts out there let alone a cyclocross one. Good job Retro!

All the Retro, None of the Grouch: New Retro Image Apparel Has Arrived!

Everything Vintage is New Again!

If you're happy and you know it, ride your bike! The (mostly) smiling staff of BicyclingHub.com modeling the new men's and women's Smile Jerseys from Retro Image Apparel.

I can't tell you how pleased we are to have all your iconic favorites back in stock. With a new manufacturer for 2011, these Retro Image Apparel jerseys offer an improved fit, brighter sublimated graphics and a softer, rapid-wicking fabric.

As soon as the boxes landed in our (outstretched) arms, BicyclingHub.com staff tried on some new Retro Image Apparel jerseys vs. the old ones for comparison. Immediately noticeable was the difference in the quality of the fabric itself: possessing a softly brushed interior with an almost silky feel directly against the skin, this new Euro fabric also provides slightly more stretch than previous years and lays flatter against the torso, eliminating the awkward "bunching" effect in the stomach region.

Retro Image Apparel's new fabric also promises to be far more breathable, rapidly wicking away sweat from the body and transferring it to the surface for quick evaporation. Mesh sides with pinhole air vents pair fashion with function, and s mall details such as the double-stitching and lined backing on the zippers were also improved--and much appreciated.

A note on sizing: while not exactly the same extra snug racer cut of years prior, Retro Image Apparel Women's Jerseys still offer a tapered cut for a sleek and stylish look. At 5' 7" and medium build, I fit into the Retro Image Apparel Women's Medium, but found the sleeves to be a bit constricting on my biceps (mountain-biking, vinyasa yoga and cross-country skiing all serve to give them some extra definition) and the jersey was a tad short for me on the hip line. Because of these two factors, I opted for a size large, which gave me a little extra length in the torso I prefer. I'd recommend someone of my size and height to go up one size from their traditional American cut, or the same as their European-brand cycling clothing.

The final word from the cycling clothing experts: for a snug fit, order the same size as your American-sized garments; for a slightly more relaxed cut, we recommend ordering one size UP from your traditional American size.

Portland-based International Cycling Apparel Retailer Announces Relocation and Expansion

Despite uneven economic terrain, bicycling industry sales steadily continue to climb

Soon, 642 SE Stark St. will be welcoming another member of Portland’s growing bicycle-based businesses into the fold. “Do one thing and do it well," advises Douglas Duguay, owner and Sales Manager of BicyclingHub.com, an Internet-based company selling high-performance technical cycling gear throughout the U.S. and over 40 countries internationally, including Canada, Australia and Japan. “And no one knows cycling clothing better than our staff. Our new space will help us live up to our full potential."

Stationed near the corner of 7th Ave. and Sandy Blvd., two main corridors for bicycle commuters in the city’s well-mapped bicycle route network, Duguay expects walk-in business to increase significantly after the move, scheduled for November 30th, 2010. With 4,000 square ft. of warehouse and office space and a designated retail area, customers will feel welcome to browse and try items on before purchasing. “I’ve already submitted a request to the City to install a bike rack in front of the new building. It’s free for businesses, and it’s a terrific way to encourage more trips by bike,” says Duguay.

Located in the Platinum-Level Bicycle Friendly Community of Portland, Oregon, BicyclingHub.com has been selling top-quality cycling apparel on the Internet since 2001. From humble beginnings as a one-man operation selling cycling jerseys on EBay out of Duguay’s spare bedroom in Southeast Portland to the company’s current standing as a successful online retailer in the global marketplace, a strong commitment to customer satisfaction has always been the cornerstone of its mission.

(photo, right: BicyclingHub.com team members enjoy the metric century route of the 2010 Oregon Tour de Cure.) While the economy continues to make tentative steps toward recovery from what pundits have dubbed “The Great Recession,” BicyclingHub.com has enjoyed a significant growth rate in sales during 2010. Although the majority of sales are conducted online, customers in Portland have been requesting a retail showroom for some time; its Annual Warehouse Clearance Sale remains a perennial favorite amongst local cycling clubs, regional teams and OBRA (Oregon Bicycle Racing Association) members. Stocking such well-known brands such as Castelli, Pearl Izumi, Louis Garneau and Showers Pass, the site specializes in hard to find items, such as the Thor Hushovd Norwegian Champion jersey, the “28 Million” Team Radio Shack-LIVESTRONG Jersey, and the limited edition Cervelo Test Team Tour de France team kit. Routinely ranked “exceptional” in its customer service ratings and known for its friendly, knowledgeable, and reliable attention, staff are heavily encouraged to commute by bike and ride in the products they sell in order to give direct feedback to consumers and manufacturers.

(photo, left: Portland's Sunday Parkways program fill the streets with thousands of bike riders, from the very young to the very young at heart.) Portland, Oregon might well be considered the ultimate testing ground for cycling apparel in a wide range of weather conditions. Portland Development Commission, Business Oregon and Oregon Business Council cite Portland is force to be reckoned with in the Activewear and Outdoor Gear world for the last thirty years,” in the recently-released Portland Economic Development Strategy. Appreciative to be headquartered in the same city as manufacturers like Castelli, Retro Image Apparel and Showers Pass, and it's a rare day that goes by that staff don't spy a cyclist wearing one of the products they sell. Ed Dalton, Co-President/Principal of Showers Pass remarks, “For us, [Portland] is the perfect proving ground for our product. It would be a challenge for us if we were…. based in Southern California." As the first Internet retailer to sell Showers Pass outerwear directly to consumers, since 2005 BicyclingHub.com has sold upwards of 1,500 Showers Pass products alone and can authoritatively speak on behalf of the brand's quality, durability, and loyal fan base.

BicyclingHub.com’s new brick-and-mortar location at 642 SE Stark St. will allow the company to expand its local retail presence while continuing to offer outstanding customer service online and by phone. Customers may continue to shop online throughout the holiday season; a grand opening of the retail space is planned for February 2011. After nearly a decade in the bicycling industry, BicyclingHub.com proudly stocks the largest selection of quality men's and women's cycling clothing in the Pacific Northwest and remains committed to continuing its platinum-level standards of service, quality and prompt delivery.
