Not All Cycling Jerseys are Made Alike

Giro D'Italia 2012 Cycling Jersey
Giro D'Italia 2012 Cycling Jersey

If your fashion sense is stopping you from giving cycling a try, give the outfits another chance. Contrary to what you often see in the media, cycling jerseys aren’t always fluorescent yellow.

The basic cycling jersey is designed to be longer in the back so skin doesn’t show as you ride; it also has pockets on the back panel and a long zipper in the front. Made from sweat-wicking materials, cycling jerseys are designed to fit you tightly so you encounter less air resistance as you ride, while also helping you stay cooler. They come in a variety of patterns and sleeve lengths, so you’re bound to find something that suits your fashion sensibilities.

Cycling Jerseys for Men

Some of the best-selling jerseys for men are those that represent a favorite brewing company, rock band, racing team or event, like the Giro d’Italia. Also available are jerseys that resemble the funny t-shirts found in department stores. Green Eggs and Ham, anyone?

Cycling Jerseys for Women

Jerseys for women are made to fit the curves of a woman’s body. The cuts are ultra-feminine, available in sleeveless varieties and come with enchanting graphics that make it hard to choose just one. Asian-inspired jerseys resemble silk Chinese qipao tops. Empowerment shirts feature Rosie the Riveter or awareness ribbons, and silly shirts feature Gumby and Dr. Seuss characters. If you want a cycling jersey that’s a little racier, keep your eyes peeled for those that look like they have a corset printed onto them.

Jersey Colors in the Pro-Cycling World

Some of the most recognizable cycling jerseys are the yellow Tour de France and the pink Giro d’Italia jerseys. In the cycling world, the jersey colors are significant. In the Tour de France, the yellow cycling jersey is for the general leader, while the points leader wears green. Several racing events use this color scheme. In the Giro d’Italia, the general leader wears a pink jersey and the points leader wears red. While pink isn’t a common jersey color, it’s common to find points leaders wearing red, green or blue. The leader in youth events usually wears a white jersey. In many races, the mountain leader wears a polka-dotted jersey.

How to Transition Your Cycling Apparel for Fall

Arm Warmers
Arm Warmers

When the fall season arrives, the weather can swing between frigid mornings and balmy afternoons. By having the right cycling apparel, you can stay comfortable as the mercury drops… or rises. Here are some tips for updating your cycling gear for fall:

Layer up. The last thing you slip on before you head out for a ride should be the first thing you want to take off when the temperature rises.

Diversify your cycling apparel. Essentials to keep in your cycling wardrobe include a short-sleeved jersey, sweat-wicking technical clothes, a thermal undershirt, a thermal skull cap, a cycling vest paired with arm warmers, gloves, covers for your cycling shoes and ¾-length cycling pants or tights. Keep in mind that if the temperature outside is 50 degrees or less, you’ll want to cover your knees. If the cycling pants aren’t padded, which is common, wear them over cycling shorts that are.

Go for breathable clothing. While you want to stay warm and toasty, you don’t want your cycling gear to trap moisture when you sweat. Trapped sweat can cause you to overheat, chafe or, if you’re in below-freezing temperatures, develop hypothermia. There are different types of sweat-wicking materials on the market, so you might need to experiment to find the ideal combination for the varying fall weather conditions.

Don’t neglect your feet, hands and head. Helmets alone aren’t generally warm enough when the temperatures fall. The thermal skull caps created for cyclists are thin enough to comfortably fit under a helmet or in a back pocket. Protect your hands with gloves made of wool or a sweat-wicking material. If it’s rainy outside, or if the wind is particularly fierce, wear waterproof gloves over the thinner pair. The same idea applies to your feet: Use comfortable wool socks, and add a bootie over your cycling shoes when it rains or gets cold.

Don’t cut your rides short this fall because you aren’t prepared for the weather. With the right combination of cycling apparel, you’ll enjoy long rides regardless of the conditions.

Hop in the Saddle

Hop in the Saddle-  A new book that celebrates two of Portland's greatest passions:  beer and bicycles.  Authors Lucy Burningham, Ellee Thalheimer and graphic artist Laura Cary collaborate on this step by step guide to Portland's thriving craft beer scene by bike.  Burningham is a contributor for Bicyclinghub.com's blog.  Help them make this project a reality by donating to them on their Kickstarter.com page.

Hop in the Saddle: A Guide to Portland's Craft Beer Scene, by Bike

For the first time, a guide book unites two of Portland’s greatest passions: Beer and bicycles. Nationally-published beer writer Lucy Burningham and prominent cycle guidebook author Ellee Thalheimer join forces to link the best craft beer spots in Portland with the city’s famous cycling routes.

Hop in the Saddle only includes the best of the best, from the city’s most intimate tasting rooms and knowledgeable beer sommeliers to innovative brewers and top-notch cheesemongers. Whether you’re interested in drinking beer straight from the barrel, knowing which of the city’s top chefs secretly cellar beer or loading up your bike some rare bottles, Lucy pours a strong brew of insider info.

The book's stellar bike routes will help you enjoy the best of each of the city’s five distinct neighborhoods: Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest and North, complete with detailed maps and cue sheets. You won’t find carefully tailored cycling routes like these anywhere else. Along the way Ellee Thalheimer clues you into the history of Portland’s bike corrals, who to say hello to at the local bike co-op, the city’s fine public bicycle art, and other PDX bike jazz.

Catering to all levels of cyclists, each basic route is accompanied by a longer option that transforms a neighborhood tootle between breweries into a bonafide, sweat-inducing bike ride. The longer routes tour iconic Portland places, from the picturesque berry farms of Sauvie Island to the city’s dormant volcanoes.

About the authors
Hop in the Saddle is the creation of three Portland friends who share a passion for beer and bicycles.
Author Lucy Burningham, designer Laura Cary, author Ellee Thalheimer
Lucy Burningham has been writing about food and drink for the past seven years of her twelve-year career in journalism and travel writing. Her preferences lean towards rare batches of homebrew and stinky cheese, and she proudly grows her own hops in her Portland backyard. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Saveur, Bicycling, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC, Lonely Planet guidebooks, Sunset, and Imbibe.
Ellee Thalheimer is an accomplished travel writer and cycle tourist. She wrote for Lonely Planet before launching cycling guide book publisher Into Action Publications. Her latest title is Cycling Sojourner: A Guide to the Best Multiday Tours in Oregon, published in May 2012 to critical acclaim. She lives in Portland and whenever she is not bicycling or writing about bicycling she can be found in the yoga studio.
Laura Cary graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, launched a successful design career in San Francisco, and moved to Portland to found brand and identity firm Cary Design Group. Her design clients have ranged from bicycle companies to the opera.

About the publisher
Into Action Publications, founded in 2011, is an imprint focusing on the best travel and cycle tours around the U.S. Forthcoming titles include Hop in the Saddle (December 2012), a guide book to bicycling between Portland’s best breweries, and the Cycling Sojourner guide to multi-day tours in Washington State (2013).

Advance praise for Hop in the Saddle
“In a town bursting with bikes and beer, no one knows more about both scenes than writer Lucy Burningham. With her vast knowledge and experience surrounding the artisan bike culture and booming beer scene, Lucy has sipped, supped and cycled her way around Portland for years, noting her favorite meals, beers and bike paths along the way. Ride with Lucy and Ellee as they navigate you through the city’s best of the best in this guide to Portland’s food, drink and cycle culture.”
–MEGAN FLYNN, EDITOR AND PUBLISHER, BEER WEST MAGAZINE

“Portland is loaded with so many beery destinations that even a longtime resident can become overwhelmed with options. Instead of taking a chance, follow Lucy to the choicest spots where the beer is top notch and the route is conveniently planned for you.”
–ALEX GANUM, FOUNDER AND BREW MASTER, UPRIGHT BREWING

“Portland is a mecca for many popular pursuits; chief among them, beer and biking. Lucy and Ellee’ s book captures the spirit of both of these with humor and adventure.”
